ACWA Launches Major Statewide Public Education Program

The Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) has launched a statewide public education program, entitled "California’s Water: A Crisis We Can’t Ignore," to educate Californians about critical challenges now confronting the state's water supply and delivery system, including a deepening crisis in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta (Delta) and a recent court-ordered massive reduction in our statewide water supply.

"We are facing some of the most significant challenges to our water system in a half-century, yet the public is largely unaware of it," said Timothy Quinn, executive director of the Association of California Water Agencies, which represents nearly all of the state's water agencies. "Just two weeks ago, a federal court ordered a massive reduction in our statewide water supply – potentially one of the largest court-ordered reductions in California history. This crisis isn’t coming; it is here and now.”

Marking the beginning of a multi-million dollar public education program, ACWA today began running radio ads throughout the state – television ads are slated to appear next week. During the next several months, the program will reach the public directly through television, radio and print advertising, as well as the Internet and community outreach. These challenges in our statewide water system could have significant impacts on our quality of life, environment, agricultural production and the general economy – it is imperative the public understands the seriousness of the situation.

More information on the program can be obtained at the new Web site for the campaign,

California’s Water: Beyond Drought -- Premieres Sept. 13th

"Beyond Drought: Factors Affecting California’s Water Supply," the 15th segment of the "California’s Water" public television series produced by Huell Howser, is set to debut at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 13th on KCET. It will then be available to air on PBS stations statewide, check your local listings for details.

Californians typically think of rain and snow as key factors in determining whether we have enough water supply, but other factors can affect the availability of our water supply as a recent crisis involving a two-inch fish, the Delta smelt, triggered shutdowns of key pumps in the Delta that provide water to 25 million Californians and 7 million acres of farmland.

"When you plan for future water needs in California, you have all of these variables that keep changing on you all of the time: smelt, salmon, drought, earthquakes, levees breaking, too much rain, not enough rain, political fights, skirmishes here and there—you’re walking through a minefield," said Howser.
